How to write italics on Twitter

X does not have formatting buttons for standard posts. Type your post here, select the words to style, and press I for italic or B for bold. Copy the post and paste it into X.

Styled text uses more of your 280 characters

X counts most characters outside the basic alphabet, including emoji and Unicode bold and italic letters, as two characters. A ten-letter bold word uses twenty of your 280. The counter here applies the same rule, so you will not get a surprise when you paste.

Questions

Good to know.

Why does my bold tweet hit the limit sooner?

X counts each styled letter as two characters, so a fully bold post fits only about 140 letters. Bold a few key words instead of the whole post.

Is this real bold text or a font?

Neither, exactly. Social apps do not support rich text in posts, so the tool swaps each letter for a look-alike Unicode character, such as 𝗕 for B. Because they are characters rather than styling, they stay bold or italic wherever you paste them.

Can screen readers read Unicode bold text?

Not reliably. Some screen readers spell styled letters out one by one or skip them. Use bold and italic for a few words of emphasis, and keep the important information in plain text.

Does styled text show up in search?

Usually not. Search on most platforms matches plain letters, so a styled word may not be found when someone searches for it. Keep names, keywords, and hashtags in plain text.
